I got a spring turkey hunting permit for this year; the spring turkey hunting
period, for my license, started on Wednesday 4/13 and it ends today, Sunday
4/17. The weather has been wonderful for the last few days. Yesterday morning was no
exception. I got up early (5:00 am) and managed to be at my spot around 5:45
am.
On the way to my spot I saw a couple of turkeys, one definitely a Tom, in the
middle of a field. You can imagine I was pretty exciting. I have gone turkey
hunting one more time in the past; last fall, without any success.
I sat down and started calling. Not only the Tom in the field but some more
turkeys on the opposite side of my spot started responding. However, the Tom I
could see, even though he strutted and strutted again and again, did not come my
way. He started walking back toward the tree line on a path parallel
from where he started to my location rather than toward me. It was soon after
he reached the tree line that i could hear him moving further away; I bet
there was a group of hens feeding in the old corn field on the other side of
the tree line.
After a while the calls from the other group of turkeys stopped as well. I
kept trying for some time, then got up and went into the woods, where I though
the second group should have been. I spent another hour or so in there but
with no success; no more calls for the day.
What can you do? You don't always get something when going hunting. If you
think about it, this is part of the excitement; it wouldn't be so if you were
guaranteed success every time you decided to go in the woods.
I had a great time watching the sunrise and a lot of excitement seeing the Tom
strut and respond to my calls. My fried has another permit for later this
month. If I have time I may go with to watch and possibly do some calling.
I cleaned my gun after I made it back to the house and stored it away. I am
all done with hunting for now. The season opens again in September with deer
bow hunting and fall turkey coming close to that. Till then, my son looks
forward to our scheduled outing for some trout fishing. My daughter is old
enough this year, she already got her little rod, and we will all go. I will
report on this trip when it happens.
